Packing for a Ski Trip: What Every Diva Needs on the Mountain (and Off!)

suitcase and beanie in front of mountainsWhat to Pack for a Ski Trip (So You’re Ready for the Slopes and Après)

You’ve booked the flights. You’ve picked the perfect ski resort. You may have even done a snow dance or two. Now comes the part that can make or break the trip: packing.

Don’t stress — we’ve got you covered. This is your go-to ski trip packing list to keep you warm on the mountain, comfortable around town, and effortlessly dialed for après.

Ski Gear: The Non-Negotiables

If you’re bringing your own skis, show them a little love before you travel. A fresh tune means smoother turns, better edge hold, and more fun on snow. If tuning at home isn’t an option, most ski towns offer quick turnaround or overnight tuning — drop them off when you arrive and start strong.

Pro Tip: If you can, ship your skis ahead. Fewer airport headaches, fewer awkward conversations at the baggage counter.

Boot Rule #1: Always Carry On Your Ski Boots

This one is non-negotiable. If luggage gets delayed, you can rent skis and poles — but boots are personal. Fit matters.

A boot bag that doubles as a carry-on is a total game changer. Look for one with:

  • Backpack straps

  • Goggle storage

  • A little extra room for socks or baselayers

Your feet will thank you.

Renting Skis?

Reserve in advance, especially during busy weeks. If possible, do your fitting the afternoon or evening before your first ski day so you’re ready for first chair.

Ski Outerwear: Waterproof Is Everything

A great ski wardrobe starts with waterproof, breathable outerwear. Insulated or shell is a personal choice, but staying dry is non-negotiable.

If you have the space, bring:

  • More than one jacket or pant option

  • Layers you can mix and match

Conditions change quickly — and yes, looking good in photos absolutely counts as a reason to plan outfits.

Base Layers & Midlayers: Your Real Workhorses

Base layers regulate body temperature and keep you comfortable all day. Pack:

  • At least two sets of baselayers

  • A mix of lighter and warmer weights

Midlayers (fleece, light down, or insulated pullovers) are perfect for adjusting warmth — and many double as après wear.

Ski Accessories: Small Things, Big Difference

These are the items people forget — and regret.

Helmet & Goggles

Bring both types of goggles, or lenses if you have them:

  • Low-light or storm lens

  • Sunny-day lens

A goggle soc that slides over your goggle lenses keeps them scratch-free.

Gloves or Mittens

We’re firmly Team Mittens — warmer, cozier, and better for cold fingers. A lighter glove or mitten is great for walking around town or après.

Neck Gaiter, Beanie & Hat Options

Easy to pack, lifesavers in wind or surprise snow. Bring:

  • A lightweight beanie, balaclava or headmand to wear under your helmet

  • A casual hat for town

  • A backup (because you can never have too many hats)

Don’t Forget Sunscreen (Seriously)

Snow reflects the sun, and mountain UV is no joke — even on cloudy days.

Pack:

  • Face sunscreen (SPF 30+)

  • Lip balm with SPF

Sunburn is not the souvenir you want.

Après & Around-Town Essentials: Because Skiing Is Only Half the Fun

The lifts stop spinning, but the day is far from over. Après is where memories are made — hot tubs, cocktails, fireside hangs, and spontaneous dance parties.

Must-Pack Après Items:

  • Swimsuit: You’ll laugh until you’re staring at the hot tub wishing you hadn’t skipped it

  • Cozy sweaters: Perfect for lounging, cocktails, or casual dinners

  • Insulated skirts: Cute, warm, and ideal for walking around town or heading straight to dinner from the slopes

  • Leggings & comfy layers: The kind you can ski in and live in afterward

Around-Town Clothes

Think functional + fashionable:

  • Warm but walkable footwear

  • Layers that transition easily from day to night

  • Pieces you can rewear in different combinations

Bonus Items That Make Life Easier

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Small backpack or tote for town

  • Laundry bag (trust us)

  • Phone charger / portable battery

The Bottom Line

Ski trips are about more than just skiing — they’re about the full experience, on and off the mountain. Pack smart, don’t skimp on waterproof gear, always carry on your boots, and never forget sunscreen and a swimsuit.

With the right gear, you’ll be warm, comfortable, and ready for whatever the mountain — or après — throws your way.

Why we love this list:
It’s practical, fun, and sets you up for a ski trip where the hardest decision is whether to order a hot cocoa or a hot toddy.
